What a suicide is not

It is not a mark of cowardice. It is not a mark of weakness. It is not about you. It is not about anyone in their life. It is not your fault. It is not the family’s fault. It is not even the system’s fault. It is no-one’s fault. It is not shameful. It is not selfish. It is not about punishing others. It is not a choice.
Suicide can be many things. But it’s not any of these. And when someone who has suicidal impulses hears these clichés voiced, the shame they can feel for having these impulses is made so much worse. If someone in your life has expressed suicidal thinking, please, learn more about what that means. Because every misconception hurts.
